I studied biology at the Westfälische-Wilhelms Universität Münster with a focus on botany, zoology, microbiology and biochemistry. Already during my study time I got involved in plant ecophysiology. I received my diploma in biology from the Westfälische-Wilhelms Universität Münster and doctoral degree in plant ecology from the University of Hohenheim.

My research interest is plant functional ecology in general and more specifically ecophysiological adaptations to extreme environmental conditions and stress physiology. I am interested in ecosystem processes and applied ecology. Presently the research focus is on ecophysiology of bioenergy crop, short-rotation forests and trees. Furthermore, I study soil-plant-atmosphere processes in agricultural systems.
